The KIPP Foundation is a nonprofit organization that supports KIPP schools across the country. The KIPP Foundation trains and develops outstanding educators to lead KIPP public schools; provides tools, resources, and training for excellent teaching and learning; promotes innovation; and facilitates the exchange of insights and ideas across KIPP and other public schools and organizations.

What You’ll Do: 

KIPP Foundation is seeking a senior leader who will direct the organization’s financial strategy in the role of Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The CFO will directly manage the Finance team and the Administration and Facilities team while creating opportunities for collaboration and learning for the KIPP Network Finance Team. As a member of the leadership team, the CFO will report directly to the CEO of KIPP Foundation and will be expected to work closely and effectively with board members.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Provide Strategic Leadership
    • Serve as a thought partner, with a key focus on stewarding and modeling collaborative leadership as a member of the leadership team. 
    • Co-chair the annual and long-term planning and budget process, with a focus on arming the leadership team with the resources, data, and tools to shape and ensure short and long-term strategies are financially sound.
    • Lead ongoing evaluations of KIPP Foundation’s financial model and pricing models for services offered by the KIPP Foundation. 
    • Partner with key stakeholders on the development team to provide financial insight and support for fundraising efforts, including coordinating systems and processes needed for audits and other related activities. 
  • Represent KIPP Foundation to Board and External Parties
    • Serve as a staff liaison to the KIPP Foundation Board Finance Committee and Audit Committee.  
    • Serve as a key liaison to the U.S. Education Department on federal grants.
    • Routinely represent the organization to financial partners, including financial institutions, investors, auditors, public officials, and board members, acting as a senior organizational representative.
  • Oversee KIPP Foundation Finance Team
    • Oversee KIPP Foundation’s accounting, budgeting, quarterly forecasting, financial reporting (private and public funding), and regulatory reporting functions.
    • Oversee all processes (e.g., distribution, reporting, and compliance) associated with a $80M+ federal grant portfolio and support budgeting for grant applications.
    • Lead the ongoing evaluation and continuous improvement of financial management systems and processes.
    • Ensure the timely execution and production of monthly financial statements by the 15th of each month.
    • Ensure strategic, optimal, and compliant management of cash and investments.
    • Surface opportunities for collaboration on matters of financing and financial sustainability across networks.
    • Serve on the 401K Admin Committee (personal fiduciary responsibility) and the Credit Committee.
  • Support & Strengthen KIPP’s Network of Finance Leaders
    • Serve as a thought leader in the national debate to define what financial sustainability means for KIPP schools and other high-performing charter management organizations (CMOs).
    • Maintain a comprehensive view of current and projected aggregate KIPP network financial performance (e.g, revenues, costs, key financial metrics).
    • Oversee the collection and annual reporting of KIPP network financial data.
    • Support KIPP schools and regions to develop effective strategies to improve financial sustainability.
    • Facilitate the dissemination of effective financial planning tools and practices among the KIPP Network finance teams.
  • Oversee KIPP Foundation Administration & Facilities Team
    • Oversee negotiations of office space leases.
    • Manage space planning and facility improvements for multiple offices.
    • Ensure we have an adequate annual renewal process (e.g., liability, property, fidelity, and insurance package).
    • Maintain vendor relationships.

Ideal Candidate Experience: 

  • Experience as a high-performing leader in the finance and operations functions of a national organization or large regional one.
  • Experience in systems-level leadership with exemplary results leading and coaching cross-functional teams at a nationwide scale.
  • Change leadership experience, ideally at a systems level, managing significant change toward successful outcomes (such as, but not limited to, restructuring and strategy pivots) while maintaining a strong focus on team culture.
  • Budget management experience overseeing and managing a complex budget that allows teams to achieve both short and long-term success.
